“Not Only Should We Safeguard Maltese Feasts, But Also Grow Them” – Owen Bonnici

Jul 2 2025 Share

The second conference on the future of the Maltese festa was held yesterday at the Manoel Theatre.

The first conference was held last year as part of the Fuq il-Festa programme, an initiative celebrating the awarding of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. This year, the conference was organised as part of the national consultation process for Vision Malta 2050.

Minister for Culture, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici emphasised the importance of everyone contributing to the consultation and highlighted the responsibility that comes with the Maltese festa’s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status.

“The festa is not only a festival for all of Malta but is now also intangible heritage for the entire world. Therefore, we must celebrate it, protect it together, and ensure that it continues to grow and move forward.” Minister Bonnici stated.

Permanent Secretary within the Office of the Prime Minister, Ronald Mizzi, spoke about Vision Malta 2050 and the crucial role every citizen plays in shaping long-term cultural policy. He explained how culture, traditions, and festas hold a pivotal place within this vision.

“Looking ahead to 2050, we must ensure that the festa  just like many other aspects of our culture  not only endures but grows, renews itself, and continues to unite all Maltese people in a country that embraces its roots while boldly looking to the future; a nation inspired by its heritage, driven by progress, and promoting a healthy quality of life for everyone.” Mr Mizzi declared.
